History & must-see highlights
Built primarily by the Mughal emperor Akbar starting in 1565, Agra Fort served as the main residence of Mughal rulers until 1638, when Shah Jahan shifted the capital to Delhi. It's built almost entirely from red sandstone, with later additions of white marble by Shah Jahan himself.
Inside, don't miss Jahangir's Palace, the Diwan-i-Am and Diwan-i-Khas (halls of public and private audience), the pearl-white Khas Mahal and Moti Masjid, and the Musamman Burj — the octagonal tower where Shah Jahan was later imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb, with a clear view of the Taj Mahal he built, across the river.
Essential visitor tips
- Carry a valid photo ID — it's required at the entrance.
- The ramparts give one of the best photo views of the Taj Mahal in Agra — don't miss it.
- The Light & Sound show runs most evenings in Hindi and English — check the current schedule locally.
- Combine it with the Taj Mahal on the same day — they're only about 2.5 km apart.
